Automotive and forklift LPG cylinders
Notice for ACT Planning and Land Authority customers
Licensed automotive LPG gasfitters need to check their installation records to determine whether they performed work on cylinders and valves that have now been recalled. Owners of the cylinders need to contact a licensed automotive LPG gasfitter and in some cases, the company manufacturer.
Type of cylinders involved
LPG Australia has issued a safety alert on SIDEK PRX pressure relief valves that are engraved with AGA Approval No 6394 and are fitted to automotive LPG cylinders. The safety warning concerns vehicles fitted with LPG cylinders or cylinders that were retested between August 2003 and April 2005.
Incidents
Several vehicle LPG gas cylinders have ruptured with significant force as a result of these valves. Most of the reported incidents have involved vehicles with two or more LPG cylinders and in particular, when one of the cylinders has been isolated. If the LPG cylinder is over pressured, the relief valve may fail to operate, resulting in a cylinder rupture/failure that has the potential to cause injury to people.
Action required
Licensed gasfitters must examine all installation records to determine whether installation work performed has included the cylinders and valves described, then contact the vehicle or cylinder owners to effect remedial action.
Details of affected persons and remedial action should then be provided by contacting:
• ACT Planning and Land Authority (02) 6207 1923
• LPG Australia (02) 9319 4733
• Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (02) 6243 1262
Owners of LPG automotive vehicles fitted with cylinders and LPG forklift cylinders manufactured by Manchester Tank and Equipment, and should contact the company on 1800 335 383 or contact a licensed automotive LPG gasfitter to have the pressure relief valves checked. Owners of other automotive and forklift cylinders retested between August 2003 and September 2005 should also contact a licensed automotive LPG gasfitter to have the pressure relief valves checked.
