Gas inspection fees and notification

New fees for gas inspections commenced on 1 September 2009.

Under the new fee structure gasfitters are required to notify ACTPLA of their intention to do gasfitting work by filling out a Start of Work Notice.

The requirement to have work inspected is set out in the Gas Safety (Code of Practice) Approval 2009, which says a “person must not connect gas to a consumer piping system unless an inspector has inspected and passed the system”.

Gas inspections are now mandatory for new homes and all commercial work. Any new gas consumer piping system connected to a new gas meter installed to a home requires inspection before gas can be connected. The gasfitter will need to lodge the Gas Start of Work Notice and pay the fee before starting work. Within seven days of completing the gas work, the Gas Certificate of Compliance form (part B of the Start of Work Notice form) must be submitted.

Mandatory inspection does not apply when connecting for the purpose of testing and extension work to an existing gas system in class 1 and/or associated class 10a structures. These remain on the previous system of audit and a Gas Certificate of Compliance must be lodged with ACTPLA within seven days of completing the work. If an audit is required or conducted by ACTPLA a fee may apply.

The base fee for all gas work is $180.
