Electrical work

Electrical installations must be tested and inspections may be required.

Certificates of Electrical Safety

Electricians and contractors must provide a detailed list of the work they do, including their tests for compliance. Within 14 days of the completion of the work, they must lodge a Certificate of Electrical Safety (CES) form with the directorate. Books of CES forms are available from the Mitchell Customer Service Centre.

Certificates can be lodged:

  • in person
  • electronically via Canberra Connect or
  • by phoning the directorate on 6207 7775.

Inspections and audits

The Planning and Land Authority may inspect completed electrical work. Electricians may inform us when the work requires inspection. We audit each electrical contractors’ work. Poor performers are inspected regularly and good performers are inspected less regularly. Discipline may result for professionals found in breach of the legislation.
