About employing a professional

Working with professionals

During the design and construction of your development, you will need to work with many different businesses and professionals. These professionals can make your project easier because they deal with the ACT Planning and Land Authority regularly and have a good understanding of planning in the ACT.

Construction occupations

Construction occupations are builders, electricians, plumbers, drainers, gasfitters, plumbing plan and building certifiers. Construction occupations can be divided into classes, for example, a builder can have a licence A, B or C.

A construction practitioner is an individual, corporation or partnership who provides, has provided or proposes to provide a construction service. Supervising construction work is also providing a construction service. A construction practitioner provides a construction service if they do or supervise work in a construction occupation.

Other professionals

There are two other professionals who are not part of the construction occupations that you may deal with during the design and construction of your development. These are architects and energy assessors.

Professionals as described above must be licensed, registered or accredited. This means they have the necessary qualifications to do the work you want them to do. Select one of the professionals listed below to find out more about things you should know before deciding who to employ:
