Architects' employment

Working with an architect

Architects provide plans and advice about the design and use of buildings.

Architectural services

Architects are needed to draw plans and other documents that need to be lodged as part of a development application.

Check registration

Architects must be registered to provide services. You can find an architect that has the relevant qualifications and expertise from our list of registered architects.

Check advertising

The advertisements of registered architects:

  • can refer to the terms "registered architect", "architect" and "architectural services"; and
  • must include their full name and registration number.

Check insurance

Registered architects must advise you of their insurance and give you evidence of the insurance they hold - including advising you if they do not have insurance - before they provide architectural services.

You may be asked to sign an acknowledgement that you have been told about the insurance arrangements. Architects must give you a copy of the signed document. The acknowledgement must state the time and date it was given.

Regulation

Anyone who believes a registered or formerly registered architect has contravened the Architects Act 2004 may put their concerns in writing by giving us feedback. Complaints may result in disciplinary action for architects.
