Gasfitters-workers' employment

Gasfitters and gasworkers are usually employed as sub-contractors by builders, but you may employ one directly for repairs and new installations.

Gas work

Gasfitters and workers are needed to disconnect, reconnect and service approved gas appliances, such as those approved by the Australian Gas Association. This generally includes mass-produced domestic and commercial gas appliances. Gasfitters and workers are also needed to install, service, design, modify and commission work on gas appliances with gas consumption in excess of 10MJ/h for which an Australian Gas Association approval scheme does not exist. This generally includes individually built industrial gas-fired appliances.

Check licensing

Gasfitters and workers need to be licensed and accredited to carry out work. They may have restrictions on their licence. You can find a gasfitter or worker who has relevant qualifications and expertise from our list of licensed gasfitters and list of accredited gas workers.

Get a certificate

Gasfitters must provide a compliance certificate to you on completion of all gasfitting work.

Get a notice of isolation

If a gasfitter has identified an appliance as being unsafe, they must give you written notification identifying the appliance and its location, stating the date when the notice is given and setting out the reason for the isolation of the appliance and the action necessary to make it safe. The notice must also include their name, accreditation number and phone number. A defect tag, if attached, will also set out many of these details and should not be touched.

Regulation

Anyone who believes a licensed or formerly licensed gasfitter or worker has not fulfilled their obligations may put their concerns in writing by giving us feedback. Complaints may result in disciplinary action.
