Architects' registration
You need to be registered to provide architectural services – i.e. services in connection with the design, planning or construction of buildings. These services do not include landscape architects. Registration will allow you to advertise your services legally, and makes you responsible for ensuring the services you or your firm provides comply with the Architects Act 2004. Architects have professional responsibilities.
Eligibility
To be eligible to register you must have relevant expertise and relevant experience as defined in the Architects Act 2004. You must hold a degree or diploma in architecture recognised by the Architects Board. You must produce sufficient evidence that you possess the required knowledge and skill for the competent practice of architecture and are considered a fit and proper person for registration.
Examination
The Architectural Practice Exam helps to determine whether you have the necessary practical experience to become registered as an architect in the ACT. Eligibility for the exam includes holding a recognised qualification and a minimum of two years practical experience of which a minimum of one year is practical experience in Australia.
For more detailed information about the process and to apply to sit the Architectural Practice Examination, (APE) please read the information package. You can also browse the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia website for more general information and the current National Competency Standards in Architecture (NCSA) publications. A schedule of events is available which lists details of mandatory briefing sessions and important dates for the application process.

Renewal, refusal and resignation
To practice as an architect you should be registered. To maintain your registration, you need to renew it annually before it expires. You can renew your registration online, including paying the required fee by credit card over a secure Internet connection via the Canberra Connect forms and payments portal.
The ACT Architects Board can refuse registration and may impose or remove conditions on a registration at the time of registration or renewal. You may resign or a firm may revoke a nominee with approval of the Board.

Anyone who believes a registered or formerly registered architect has contravened the Architects Act 2004 may put their concerns in writing by giving us feedback. Complaints may result in disciplinary action for architects.
