Electricians' licensing
Apply to be a licensed electrician
You must be licensed for electrical work.
Types of licences
Electricians may be issued one of three types of licenses:
- electrical contractor’s licence;
- unrestricted electrician’s licence; or
- restricted electrician’s licence.
If you apply for an unrestricted electrician's licence but lack practical experience of electrical wiring work, you may be issued an electrician's permit. This allows you to carry out electrical wiring work under supervision of a unrestricted electrician or restricted electrician licensed in the same incidental electrical work.
If you apply for a restricted electrical licence but lack practical experience in incidental electrical work, you may be issued a restricted electrical permit. This allows you to carry out restricted electrical work under supervision.
You may be issued a restricted electrician's licence to disconnect and reconnect electrical equipment incidental to your trade in plumbing, electrical fitting, refrigeration and air conditioning, mechanical fitting and type B gas appliance work.
Eligibility
The Mandatory Qualifications Schedule sets out the qualifications required for the different types of licences. These include tertiary qualifications and work experience. Further details on qualifications, supervision of work and the different types of licenses are in Electrical Note 3: Restricted electrical licences and Electrical Note 4: Electrical licensing.
