Surveyors registration

Only surveyors registered under the Surveyors Act 2007 are qualified to sub-divide land under the Districts Act 2002 and the Unit Titles Act 2001.  Surveyors are also qualified to re-establish existing boundaries, provide certificates showing the location of buildings in relation to the boundaries, and to resolve disputes over the location of boundaries.  Surveyors are able to provide contour and detail maps and data.  They also have industry-specific responsibilities.

Eligibility

To be eligible to register, surveyors must have a four year surveying degree and at least two years practical experience.  Some of this experience may be attained during the university degree.

Examination

The ACT does not hold independent registration examinations.  Instead, the ACT relies upon the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 (Commonwealth) and accepts registration from other Australian and New Zealand jurisdictions.  Most commonly, those who wish to be registered in the ACT sit the examinations provided by the NSW Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (BOSSI).  The ACT may provide examiners to BOSSI for this purpose.
