Architects' responsibilities

Responsibilities of a registered architect

Architects have several professional responsibilities for providing architectural services.

Registration

You need to be registered to provide "architectural services".

Advertising

You must be registered to advertise your architectural services. If you are registered, your advertisement:

  • can refer to the terms "registered architect", "architect" and "architectural services"; and
  • must include your full name and registration number, or in the case of a firm, the full name of the primary nominee and registration number.

If you are a registered architect interstate, you may use the terms "architect" or "registered architect" only if you provide proof of your registration and advise the ACT Architects Board in writing before you advertise.

Insurance

You need to show to a client evidence of the insurance you hold before providing a service. This includes advising a client that you do not have insurance if that is the case. You may ask the client to sign an acknowledgment that they have been told about your insurance arrangements. The acknowledgment must state the time and date it was given. If the client signs the acknowledgement, you must immediately give them a copy. In the case of a dispute, you will need to provide proof of advising clients about insurance arrangements.

Standards and legislation

Services provided by you or your firm need to comply with the Architects Act 2004.

Regulation

Anyone who believes a registered or formerly registered architect has contravened the Architects Act 2004 may put their concerns in writing by giving us feedback. Complaints may result in disciplinary action for architects.
