Asbestos removalists' responsibilities
Responsibilities of a licensed asbestos removalist
Asbestos removalists have several responsibilities for ensuring the removal of asbestos is professional.
Licensing
The provision of an asbestos removal service requires that an individual providing that service holds a current asbestos removal licence. There are restrictions on the type of work that can be done depending on the licence class.
Asbestos removal control plans
An asbestos removal control plan should contain, as a minimum, the:
- method proposed to be used to remove the asbestos;
- approximate quantity and kind of asbestos to be removed;
- equipment proposed to be used to remove the asbestos, including any personal protective equipment; and
- details of a program for monitoring airborne asbestos (prepared in accordance with the National Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos).
Standards and legislation
The standards and legislation that apply to asbestos removalists’ work are:
- the National Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos;
- Removal of up to 10m2 of bonded asbestos;
- Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004 and regulation;
- Building Act 2004; and
- Dangerous Substances Act 2004.
Safety
You need to understand the minimum health and safety requirements in relation to, the asbestos removal services and asbestos handling. See the ACT Government's asbestos web site for more information.
Regulation
Anyone who believes a licensed or formerly licensed asbestos assessor has not fulfilled their obligations may put their concerns in writing by giving us feedback. Complaints may result in disciplinary action.
