AFFORDABLE HOUSING - TAKING STEPS TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

In April 2007, the ACT Government released the Affordable Housing Action Plan. Since then, significant steps have been taken to improve housing affordability and availability in Canberra.  There’s no ‘quick fix’ and no single solution but the ACT community is already starting to see the benefits of the Action Plan.

This website  presents the Affordable Housing Action Plan Progress Report, bringing  you up to date with what’s been happening. It looks at the initiatives proposed by the Affordable Housing Action Plan, and tells you what has actually been achieved against each of them. You can get an overview from the pages on this site, download Fact Sheets on individual initiatives, or download the whole Progress Report for detailed information.

Looking Ahead

To make sure the Government can deliver on the Affordable Housing Action Plan initiatives, skilled workers need to be available to build the houses. An important part of the plan involves attracting new workers to Canberra and building the skills of the current workforce.

Among the initiatives being pursued in this area are extending apprenticeship opportunities, supporting the new Bachelor of Building and Construction Management degree at the University of Canberra, and continuing the successful ‘Live in Canberra’ program.
