East Lake Urban Renewal
Draft planning report
The ACT Planning and Land Authority is considering the future for an area within the inner southern suburbs of Canberra, including parts of Fyshwick, Kingston and Griffith, known as East Lake.
The future of the East Lake area
The East Lake Draft Planning Report (PDF 11.9MB) identifies potential outcomes for the future of the East Lake area. The draft report represents a summary of site investigations and studies carried out to date. It also outlines an innovative approach to urban intensification, reflecting the latest thinking in sustainable development.
CSIRO partnership
The ACT Government has entered into a partnership with CSIRO through the Sustainable Communities Initiative. The partnership project is to explore opportunities for innovation in sustainable urban development and renewal. The project takes an ‘action research’ approach and engages the local community, interest groups and industry stakeholders early in the research planning and design approach. Commencing in 2007, the partnership will run for three years to inform the planning and implementation for East Lake. More information about the project is available on the CSIRO website.
Consultation to date
Consultation on the draft report was held for eight weeks during September, October and November 2007, including an information session in October 2007. A Consultation Summary report (PDF 1.4MB) has been released that outlines the main issues raised through this process.
CSIRO held a concurrent community engagement process from September to December, associated with the Sustainable Communities Initiative partnership project. The process included consultation with industry groups, local businesses, residents, community groups and Government agencies. CSIRO have released a ‘Stakeholder Engagement Report’ which is available through their website.
What happens next?
All of the comments made during consultation have been considered, and as a result, more studies are being done by ACTPLA to help develop the plan for East Lake. The CSIRO is also doing more work and studies in partnership with ACTPLA on the project.
After this work is completed a revised Planning Report will be prepared that takes into account all of the issues raised so far and the further work done by ACTPLA and the CSIRO on the project. This report will be issued with a draft Variation to the Territory Plan. When the draft Variation is released there will be another formal public consultation process. This will give people more opportunities to have input on the future of the East Lake area.
