Molonglo Valley Stage 2 - March to June 2011

The purpose of stage 2 was to seek feedback on the key issues for consideration in the preparation of the draft planning and design framework. The second community forum presented the preferred layout option which has considered the key issues and ideas identified at the first community forum.

Through the two community forums, the community’s views were sought on:

  • housing for 18,000 new residents
  • a lively commercial centre and employment hub
  • community open spaces and facilities
  • safe transport networks for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
  • protecting the natural environment through sustainable energy, water and waste management.

Feedback was used to inform the preparation of the draft planning and design framework technical report and the proposed development option for stage 2, which was presented to the community on 2 June 2011.

Community Forum no.1

Following initial planning and analysis work for the draft PDF, local residents, interested groups and the general public were invited to attend the first community forum on 24 March 2011.

This forum:

  • provided information on earlier consultations and planning work to date via a series of static display panels, printed materials and a presentation.
  • outlined development issues, challenges and options for Molonglo Valley stage 2 planning
  • sought community input – ideas, comments and suggestions
  • provided information as to the next steps in the planning process.

An Issues paper (954.0 KB) which provided a more detailed summary of the key issues was also made available.

A total of 127 members of the public attended this community forum, with 42 of these participating in the facilitated workshop session. Sixty people registered their details for further update information.

Community Forum no.2

A second community forum was held 2 June 2011 to complement the progression of the planning and design work for the draft PDF and the formulation of a preferred option for the layout and location of land use within the development area. A total of 45 people attended the forum, with 31 of these participating in the facilitated workshop session.

The structure of the forum was the same as the first; however, the purpose of the second consultation forum was to:

  • provide an overview of the proposed design and draft PDF for Molonglo Valley stage 2
  • provide feedback to participants and the general community on how public input has been considered in the planning work
  • seek community input on the proposed design and content of the draft PDF technical report
  • provide information on the next steps in the planning process.

Youth consultation

The youth consultation road show was part of the broader consultation program undertaken. Conducted by ESDD staff, 63 young people aged 12-24 participated in the consultation. The primary purpose was to get an idea of the views of young people who live, work, play or study within the Molonglo Valley surrounds. See the consultation report for the youth consultation for Molonglo Valley (2.4 MB) RTF version (37.9 KB) here.

Community and Industry Reference Group

A community and industry reference group (CIRG) was established at the start of the project to provide specialised input into the Molonglo Valley stage 2 draft PDF project.

Membership represented a range of professional and industry organisations and social and environmental groups. The CIRG met on 28 November 2010, 3 March and 25 May 2011. Ideas and comments from the forum were incorporated into the planning process and formed an important input to the proposed layout option and the draft PDF.
