What it is all about
Why do we need to consider sustainability in our cities?
- We can't survive without life's essentials - air, water and food.
- These essentials are largely provided by resources outside the built up areas of cities.
- Cities depend on the farms, reserves, open spaces and waterways in their surrounding regions.
- We cannot continue the way things were done in past centuries because of ‘drivers for change’ such as peak oil, climate change, population change.
- Sustainable cities are prosperous, vibrant, liveable, accessible and affordable for people - places we want to live, work and play in.
- Sustainable cities value, support and are linked into their regions, providing those communities and places with services and other opportunities.
- In Australia, our cities are networked with the world so we need to ‘think globally and act locally’.
- Because Canberra is a carefully planned city, it is well-placed to join the global trend towards sustainability.
What is the Sustainable future program?
The Sustainable future program will identify strategies and measures that complement other ACT Government policies and help to achieve their targets, such as:
- People, Place and Prosperity
- Weathering the Change
- ACT Government greenhouse gas targetsIt will also review and develop planning policies for more sustainable living, including the evaluation of the Canberra Spatial Plan.
Through the program, ACTPLA will engage with the community about the work.
